Get To Know The Southside Light

The Southside Light is a member-supported, digital-first, nonpartisan media organization that informs area residents — and engages with them — about public policy, politics, government and community issues.

The Southside Light and its destination website were launched in November 2018, thanks to private contributions as seed funding, a small band of talented engineers and some of the most accomplished journalists and data managers in the area.

The Light, which is the only Corpus Christi area news outlet with a  statehouse news bureau, covers a full range of topics including public and higher education, health care, immigration, criminal justice, energy, poverty, the environment, water, transportation — pretty much every line in local budgets. We also cover the major candidates and campaigns for office, though we train our sights less on the candidates than the issues. And we facilitate an areawide conversation about these topics on our op-ed pages. To further our pursuit of engagement, we provide all of our content, for free, to print, radio and television news organizations throughout the state.

The Light is supported by individual contributions and memberships, major gifts, corporate sponsorships, events and foundation grants.

We believe in our not-for-hire news model and we believe that is the only way to truly remain independent.
