Unemployment Hitting Hard During COVID-19 Pandemic

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Southside Light News) -- Two weeks ago, the number of Texans that filed for unemployment was fairly low at just 16,176 new filers, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. But this week, after state and local leaders shut down businesses across the state to slow spread of the new coronavirus — the number of new filers skyrocketed to 155,657.

Statistics show that last year, the average was around about 13,600 Texans per week filing for new unemployment benefits claims.
